We will celebrate Earth Day on April 22.

The United Nations chose April 22 as International Mother Earth Day.

Earth Day is a yearly event held globally to manifest support for the protection of our environment. Some 193 countries commemorate this important event coordinated worldwide by the Earth Day Network.

The EDN joins hands with advocates and communities in these nations to bring up ecological concerns and issues as well as diversifies and mobilizes the movement to promote our environment. It raises awareness about global warming, climate change, biodiversity, and eco-friendliness. Some of the more popular activities are tree-planting, garbage collection, and cleaning of parks that transpire all over the world.

Earth Day highlights the distinctiveness of our planet because of its remarkable biodiversity. The activities are carried out so people will understand and appreciate biodiversity as well as the protection of plants, animals, and the ecology.

Biodiversity

Biodiversity refers to variety of life on earth. It encompasses species of plants; types of animals; and, classes of microorganisms. It also includes the vast assortment of genes (basic unit of heredity) in said species and various ecosystems on earth. These are the deserts, coral reefs, and tropical rain forests. Conservation together with sustainable development techniques aim to integrate approaches in the preservation of biodiversity. However, biodiversity is deteriorating raising concerns among environmental advocates.

What is its significance?

Biodiversity bolsters the productivity of our ecosystems. Each species (small and big) has a crucial role to play. For instance, numerous plant varieties translate to more crops. Diversity produces natural sustainability for all forms of life. Wholesome ecosystems are able to endure and recover from different natural calamities. Likewise, biodiversity offers a lot of natural services.

  1. Formation and protection of soils
  2. Breakdown and absorption of pollution
  3. Safeguarding water resources
  4. Upkeep of ecosystems
  5. Help sustain climate stability
  6. Provide food, medicinal resources, timber, breeding stocks, and others
  7. Variety in genes and bionetworks
  8. Tourism
  9. Recreation
  10. Cultural values

Environmental-Friendly or Eco-Friendly

Environmental-friendly living implies living with intent which focuses on taking care of and not harming our environment. It is more than an idea or concept. Eco-friendly means tangible practices that shape how different communities, enterprises, and consumers carry on with their lives as well as responsibilities. Environmental-friendly does not only imply turning off the lamp when you leave your bedroom or separating trash for proper recycling. It is all about modifying the purpose of how people live for the better.

Unfortunately, there are many severe environmental problems that require serious attention so we can sustain our green planet. These issues include pollution (air, land, and water); global warming; use of non-degradable chemicals and plastic products; and, many more. We need to pool our efforts and strive to preserve our planet. Environmental-friendly products uphold green living for energy conservation. These products also help cope with pollution thereby sustain our environment.

Celebrate Earth Day 2018 by living an environmental-friendly lifestyle. Keep this in mind not only this year but every year.
